If a tooth is badly damaged, often people assume that the only thing that can be done is that the tooth will need to be extracted. That is not necessarily the case. Here at Eric J. Sadler, DDS & Associates, we want to look at all of the options, and if possible we want to save the tooth. Several different things can be done to a tooth that is cracked, chipped, or damaged. One of those things is known as a crown.
Crowns and Your Oral Health
A dental crown is also sometimes called a cap. Crowns will give you a new smile, without tooth loss. Here is what you should know about crowns.
There are several different ways to repair a tooth. With a crown, none of your natural tooth will still be seen. The root system will still be there. We will form the crown and place it over the tooth. It is important that your gums near the tooth are healthy. We do not want to place a crown next to diseased gums, because that could lead to infection.
The first thing that we will do if you are receiving a crown is to take a mold of your tooth. We will want to make sure that the crown is the exact size and fit for you. We will then prepare the tooth for you.
Next, we could do one of two things. We might give you a temporary crown. That will act as your tooth until the new crown has been made. The newer choice is that we will have you wait while the new crown is being made. There are variables to each option, and we will talk about them with you and decide before you start the procedure.
When it is time for the permanent crown, we will remove the temporary crown if you have one. We will then give you the permanent crown. It will look and feel just like a natural tooth.
If you have a temporary crown, you will need to be careful with it while we are waiting for the permanent crown to be made. Avoid biting down hard on anything.
Once you have a permanent crown, you will still want to be careful. Do not bite hard candy or ice with your crown. You will want to brush several times a day and floss as well. We might also suggest using interdental cleaners to clean your teeth. These are designed to help you to clean along the gum line.
A dental crown can be a great alternative to tooth extraction. It will give you back your smile, and no one will know that you have it unless you decide to tell them. Here at Eric J. Sadler, DDS & Associates, we love to restore people's smiles. If you have any questions about crowns, or if you need to see us for something else, please call (336) 331-5271.
