Good oral practices and a healthy smile start at a very young age. We need to teach our kids at an early age what they need to do to take care of their teeth. We here at Eric J. Sadler, DDS & Associates are ready to do our part, but you need to do your part as well. Here are a few suggestions and some information on teaching kids to make their dental care a top priority.

Your Kids and Their Smiles

It is not all that difficult to teach your children what they need to do to have healthy smiles that will last a lifetime.

Before we even mention the habits that you need to teach your children, there is something that we need to call attention to. Projecting your fears onto your children is easy. If you have a fear of the dentist, do not mention it when your kids could be listening. If your child thinks that you are afraid, he or she will be afraid as well. Do not mention pain, do not make jokes about cavities, and do not use a trip to the dentist as any threat. These things will cause your child to want to stay away, even as an adult.

As soon as your baby starts to teeth, talk to your pediatrician about what you should do to keep the baby's mouth healthy. Also, ask at what age your child's doctor would recommend the first visit to our office.

Kids learn by example. Let them see you brushing and flossing your teeth. When they are old enough, buy him or her their first toothbrush. A young child will not brush properly at first, but that is not something to concern yourself with. Even if the child wants to chew on it that is fine. The idea is to get used to having a toothbrush, and to make using one a routine.

When your child is old enough to understand, start to teach the basics of proper brushing. A fun toothbrush based on a favorite character is a good idea.

Your pediatrician will tell you when it is time to make your child's first appointment here. Let your child know ahead of time what is going on. Read books to your child about going to the dentist, and also watch videos that explain it at a level that kids can understand.

Plan something fun for after the first visit. That will give your child something to look forward to.

During the first appointment, hold your child's hand. We will also talk to your child about what we are about to do.

When children learn proper dental care at an early age, they will develop good habits that will make a difference throughout their lives.
