Winston-Salem & Greensboro, NC
You know that dental exams are an important part of making sure that you have a healthy mouth. That does not mean that you still come in to see us as often as you should. Here at Eric J. Sadler, DDS & Associates, we want to do our part in keeping your mouth healthy, but you need to do your part as well. Small problems can quickly become large problems if they are ignored. We want to make sure that you do not have any regrets down the road.
A Few Things That You Need to Know About Dental Exams
If you have not been in for a dental exam in a while, you might have forgotten what to expect. Here are some of the things that we will do, and also some other information.
If you smoke or chew tobacco, it is essential that you see us regularly for an oral exam. Also, if you smoke or chew, do not try to hide that information from us, we need to know. We will look for signs of oral cancer. This includes examining all parts of your mouth, including your tongue and the back of your throat. We will do both a visual exam as well as a feel for lumps or bumps that should not be there. If you smoke or chew tobacco, we encourage you to take the first steps towards quitting right away.
We look for more than just cancer during an exam. We will also check for gum disease, tooth decay, loose teeth, dental abscesses, and more. If these conditions are left untreated, they could lead to more serious health issues. They could even lead to a heart attack or stroke.
One important part of an exam that you might not realize happens before we look inside your mouth. We will talk about anything out of the ordinary that you might have experienced. We want to know about everything. If your jaw keeps cracking or if you had pain three weeks earlier when you bit a hard piece of candy, let us know about it. Let us know about tooth sensitivity as well. The best way that we will know what to check for is if you tell us about anything that you might have experienced since your last visit.
Part of an exam will also include a deep dental cleaning. We will get rid of plaque, polish your teeth, apply fluoride, and more.
Depending on what we discover during your exam, we may decide to order x-rays. This is nothing to worry about; dental x-rays are safe.
Of course, what happens during an exam may vary, depending on the patient and any issue that we might find. What you need to remember is that we cannot find problems and treat them if you do not come in. Here at Eric J. Sadler, DDS & Associates, we are committed to making sure that your teeth and gums are healthy.
