Dental Crowns
Winston-Salem & Greensboro, NC] ] ]

Sometimes it is necessary to extract a tooth. It could be because there was much decay on the tooth, or maybe the tooth was broken. We might also extract if the tooth is crowding the other teeth in your mouth, like will often happen with wisdom teeth. A damaged or decayed tooth does not always mean an extraction, however. At Eric J. Sadler, DDS & Associates we want to save the tooth if possible while giving you back your smile. One of the ways that we can often save teeth is with crowns.

Some Important Information on Crowns

It is important that you know about any dental procedure that we might recommend. If we have mentioned crowns to you, here are the basics.

A crown is also sometimes called a cap. With a crown, you will keep your natural tooth, but that tooth will no longer be seen. We will place the crown on top of your natural tooth, and that is what will be visible when you smile.

If we have recommended a traditional crown to you, it will require two visits at either our Winston-Salem or Greensboro office. For the first visit, we will make an impression of the tooth that is going to receive the crown. That is so that we will be able to make a crown that will fit perfectly in your mouth. Another thing that we will do at the time is to prepare the tooth.

That means that we will shave your natural tooth and shape it. We will also get rid of any decay or other issues. During the first visit, we will fit you with a temporary crown, so that you will still be able to eat. This will also protect the prepared tooth as we wait for your permanent crown to be ready. You will be sent home with instructions on how to care for the crown. Be careful when you eat, because remember that this one is only a temporary crown.

Once the permanent crown is ready, you will return to our office. We will then remove the temporary crown, and bond the permanent crown to your tooth. It will look natural, and after you get used to it, you will most likely forget that it is there most of the time.

If the crown is in a spot that is easy to see, most likely it will be a ceramic crown. If it is not visible, we might use a mix of metals instead.

You will care for your crown just like you care for your natural teeth. If you discover that you have a problem with it, or if the crown becomes loose (which should not happen), contact us immediately.
