Cleanings and Exams
There are two important steps that everyone needs to take to have a healthy mouth. The first step you need to take care of at home. It is important that you develop good habits and follow them every single day. It would help if you brushed your teeth after every meal and before you go to bed. It would help if you also used dental floss daily to get rid of what your toothbrush missed. If you do not use mouthwash, add that into your daily routine as well.
The second thing that everyone needs to do is to see us here at Eric J. Sadler, DDS and Associates regularly. For most patients, we recommend an appointment every six months. During this appointment, we will clean your teeth. A deep dental cleaning will not only improve your overall oral health; it will also make your mouth feel fantastic.
What to Expect During a Routine Dental Cleaning
If you have not been to our office in a while, you might not know what to expect during your dental cleaning. Here are the basics of what we will do.
We will start by talking to you. We want to know about any problems that you have been experiencing. Make sure that you tell us about any pain in your mouth or jaw that you might have experienced, as well as other things such as bleeding gums. We will also look over your dental records.
Next, we will examine your mouth. This will include a visual inspection using a dental mirror, as well as feeling for things such as lumps. We may or may not decide to order x-rays.
Plaque and tartar can cause decay and other problems. That is why we will remove any that we find. We use a special tool to remove plaque, it is not something that you can do at home.
Next comes brushing and polishing your teeth. This will make them feel incredibly clean and smooth. We have a dental toothpaste that has more of a gritty texture than what you use at home. We also have a special brush to use. After we have finished brushing and polishing, we will floss your teeth to make sure that nothing is left behind.
It is time to rinse out your mouth. We will give you a special solution that you will need to swish throughout your entire mouth. Make sure that you get your gums and the inside of your cheeks when we tell you to, spit the solution out.
The final step of dental cleaning is usually a fluoride treatment. This will help to keep your teeth strong. We will place a gel in a mouthguard, and you will bite down on it until we tell you to stop.
In many cases, that is all that there is to basic dental cleaning. If we found any issues, we might treat them immediately, or we might have you make an appointment to return. If you are overdue for an appointment here at Eric J. Sadler, DDS and Associates, call right away. Dental cleanings are an important part of having a healthy mouth.
