Have you ever looked at an actress on television and wished that your teeth could be as white as hers? Let us assure you that her teeth did not get that way on their own. She did not get that dazzling white smile by using a whitening toothpaste or strips that she put on her teeth. She received that smile because she had her teeth professionally whitened in a dental office. The good news is that you can have a dazzling white smile as well. We here at Eric J. Sadler, DDS & Associates would love to help you to have a smile that you want to show off.
Basic Information on Tooth Whitening
It is possible to have a whiter smile. Here is what you need to know.
Before we go into actually whitening your teeth, we should talk a little bit about why you want them whitened to begin with. Your teeth get stained by things that you eat and drink every day. Your daily coffee habit is staining your teeth. That glass of red wine that you enjoy each night is doing the same thing. Foods such as blueberries also can stain your teeth over time. Another way that teeth get stained is through smoking. The more you smoke, the more stained your teeth will be.
There are a couple of different ways that we can whiten your teeth in our office. Often we will use bleach to get rid of the stains on your teeth. Technically, this is known as "bleaching" instead of "whitening." Often we will use a combination of bleach and hydrogen peroxide. Before we apply the solution, we will clean your teeth and also examine your enamel. We want to make sure that your teeth and gums are healthy and will not be damaged or irritated because of the bleach.
There is another in-office practice that we will use to whiten teeth. We will use a laser. To do it, we will use a low-level laser to remove stains and whiten your teeth. It is safe, and it is painless. Laser whitening is a great alternative to bleach for those who cannot have it for some reason. Other people prefer whitening with a laser because they are worried that too much bleach will damage their teeth over time.
If you are looking for dazzling white teeth, you are not going to get the results that you see on the actress at home. It is not recommended that you create your bleach solution at home, because you will not know if your teeth and gums are healthy enough for it. Whitening toothpaste can remove some of the stains, but your teeth will only get a little bit whiter.
You can use a whitening toothpaste between professional whitenings if you want. If you would like to learn more about getting whiter teeth, contact us here at Eric J. Sadler, DDS & Associates.
